There are two types of people in the world, those who would take an Alzheimer's patient on a joy ride and those who would say it was a waste of time.

Piece of Cake Fitness is a Personal Training Service; specializing in working with clients who have memory issues. While exercise will not cure memory loss, it can help slow the process. Exercising increases both blood flow and the amount of oxygen going the brain, which has shown to be beneficial to brain function. In addition, regular exercise will help prevent muscle loss. Science has also shown that learning something new, may result in new connections between cells in the brain.

While, exercise increases blood flow and helps prevent muscle loss, therefore preventing functional mobility loss, I feel there are added benefits.  Exercising regularly help fight depression while providing more social interaction. My goal is to provide the client with a sense of accomplishment. I want clients to feel they are not giving in to their condition. By fighting as a team to slow the process of memory loss, I hope to provide a sense of empowerment.

Exercise for the caregiver is also important. Exercise can help relieve stress and improve your mood. In addition, strengthening core muscle will help minimize the risk of muscle strain when assisting a loved one in every day activities. While a caregiver may feel the last thing, they need another commitment to their limited “me” time; performing a ten-minute workout session achieves the benefits of exercise. By accomplishing just two ten minutes session in a day, the caregiver will be close to the suggested 150 minutes of exercise a week.

I am a certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE). I also hold a certificate in Senior Fitness from ACE and a certificate in Functional Fitness from Exercise Inc. I design individualized programs based on the client’s current fitness level. I take into consideration that a client’s abilities can, and most likely will, change daily. I use body weight, exercise bands, and free weights. This allows me to customize the exercise to a client’s abilities each session.
